Christchurch Women's Refuge is New Zealand's first and foremost social change agency dedicated to preventing violence against women, young people and children. Our mission is to create a society where all women, young people and children live life free from violence. To help achieve that we provide a 24-hour crisis and support line, emergency safe accommodation, community support programmes, education, research and policy development.
Family Violence (also known as domestic abuse, spousal abuse, or intimate partner violence) occurs when a family member, partner or ex-partner attempts to physically or psychologically dominate another. Family Violence can also include cohabitants and non-married intimate partners. Domestic violence occurs in all cultures; people of all races, ethnicities, religions, sexes and classes can be perpetrators of domestic violence.
Christchurch Women's Refuge is championing the creation of a National Centre for the Prevention of Family Violence, which would bring services related to family violence together in one place. This initiative is still in its infancy and we are in the process of community consultation and education. Find out more about the National Centre for the Prevention of Family Violence.
